What Should I Put In My New Book?
The short answer is 'anything you would like!' But if you're new to Pagan practices and/or Journaling such an open-ended answer might be a little daunting. Here is a short list of sections and pages that are commonly part of a Magical Journal:
* Poetry- Commonly used Wiccan or Pagan Poetry such as The Charge of The Goddess or The Witches Rune is a wonderful addition to any book. Your personal poetry or poetry that is not of a Pagan pedigree but resonates with you are also good choices.
*Herbal Information - Most Books contain a section on Herbs and their Correspondences for easy reference
*Seasonal Information - the inclusion of traditional celebrations such as Yule and Samhain are a good idea and be sure to leave extra pages available for the addition of family or individual celebrations as they develop within your practice.
*Moon Phases and Observances - think 'Almanac' here
*Tools - do you use an Athame, a Besom, or a Cauldron? How about smudges, candles or chimes? A section of the useful items is commonly included.
*Recipes - from handcrafted Soaps to Loose Incenses, Oil Blends, Magical Powders & Teas, a recipe section is a wonderful addition
*Spells - what magical book would be complete without a section for Spells, Rites, & Rituals? A word of advice here- take your time with this section. Add items as you've done them and you know how they work and what what the particulars are. There's no sense in wasting pages on rites that leave you feeling 'blah' or spells that didn't have the intended 'oomph'.
*Art- Please make your book beautiful- this is an heirloom! Draw, paint, collage-- add all of these things and make the book truly your own.

A Short History of The Book of Shadows or Grimoire
Witches, Pagans, Mages, and Magicians often create and maintain a magical journal called a Book of Shadows, Grimoire or Spell Book. Books like these are considered 'traditional tools' and one may hear tales now and again of a 'family book of shadows' going back 4 or 500 years. These tales are doubtful as most Cunning Folk didn't possess the literary skills needed to create such a record nor the financial means to possess something of such value as a bound book.
While a family Book of Shadows going back to the Middle Ages is -as I said earlier- doubtful, there ARE very old Grimoires and Spell Books. Some of the most well-known are The Key of Solomon and The Lesser Key of Solomon (both wrongly attributed to the Biblical King Solomon and more than likely written in 14th or 15th century during the Italian Renaissance), as well as several texts published in the 1400's regarding a new form of Jewish Mysticism called Kabbalah. Early mystical books and texts dealt heavily with the summoning, commanding, and controlling of demons, angels, and the like (Ceremonial Magic). However, there were some spell books that concentrated on the natural magics and herbals of the 'lower' or folk magics, The Magia Naturalis written in the late 1500's was one of these.
So, are these items 'traditional'? Of course- if it's part of your or your group's list of tools! Is such a tool needed? Of course not, but it is a wonderful item to have for a variety of reasons; as a personal record of your Spiritual Path and journey, as recipe book for herbal preparations, spells, prayers, chants, or poetry, and as a working heirloom for those who would practice The Work after you. What a wonderful way to share your journey, discoveries, and connection to Spirit with your children's children's children
